No surrender for ‘Florence White Flags’ at Hood to Coast


The 12-member team representing Florence in Saturday’s 28th annual Hood to Coast Relay paced itself for a repeat of last year’s first-place

Aug. 28, 2019 — The 12-member team representing Florence in Saturday’s 28th annual Hood to Coast Relay paced itself for a repeat of last year’s first-place, defending its title with a dominant performance in the 199-male race from Mt. Hood to Seaside.

Competing in the Mixed Masters Division, this year’s team was made up of runners Amy Flora, Justin Loftus, Cambria Gilsdorf, Robyn McGillis, Thor Esbensen, Chris Johnson, Monika Zweifel, Mark Bloudek, Ben Sauvage, Jeff Spang, Jen Brendon and Rachelle Campbell.

The team competed in a field of more than 1,500 teams — and 18,000 runners — and finished in 23 hours, 33 minutes, 30.7 seconds.

The second team across the finish was Soul Asylum: Vans on the Run, of Elmhurst, Ill., with a time of 26:30:15.2.

This year’s roster for Florence included six returners from 2018 — Flora, Gilsdorf, McGillis, Johnson, Campbell, Bloudek — along with new members Snake Ulrich, Tasha Nuno, Lee Wilson, Jennifer Brennan, Brent Hutton and Robbie Garcia.

The team placed 32 overall, with the Bowerman Track Club setting the day’s best time in 17:19:01.3.
