Muller, Overton qualify for state mats

For the first time in its history, Siuslaw will send wrestlers to the girls state tournament.

Feb. 12, 2020 — The Siuslaw girls wrestling team qualified for this year’s OSAA Girls State Tournament this weekend, with two Lady Vikings grapplers placing fourth at the Southern Girls’ Regional last week.

“This is the first time that Siuslaw has qualified any girl participants for the state tournament,” said Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik.

Both Bailey Overton (120 lbs.) and Hayden Muller (135 lbs.) placed fourth in their respective weight classes, qualifying them for the state tournament.

“Both girls won three straight matches Friday which put them in the semifinals Saturday,” Wartnik said. “Both lost to outstanding opponents in the semis but came back in the consolation semifinals with pins which placed them in the consolation finals.”

Wartnik described Overton’s match as a “dog-fight,” a tough back and forth that saw her eventually losing to an opponent from Central, 5-3.

“Hayden was pitted against returning state champion Taylor Olson from Mountain View in her last match and suffered an elbow injury in the second round,” Wartnik said.

Rather than chance worsening the injury, Wartnik chose to accept a loss-by-injury default. “Hayden’s injury seems to have been a sprain, and we are hopeful that she will be ready for state.”

Muller had approximately 30 girls in her bracket, while Overton had around 40. The tournament director stated that participation in the event was up 300 percent from last year.

“Both our girls did a great job, competing against girls from 1A/2A through 6A,” Wartnik said. “Girls wrestling is on the rise, and we are glad to be part of that movement.”
