McCRARY—Joan “Joanie” Marie (Cline) McCrary of Florence, Ore., died on May 12, 2021. She was born on June 7, 1939, to John Russell and Marian Alice (Franklin) Cline of Denver, Colo. Joanie passed away peacefully under the excellent care of her husband, Peace Health Hospice and New Friends staff.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ronald Eugene McCrary of Florence, Ore.; her daughter and son-in-law Kathryn Hope and Paul Wilken and grandchildren Joshua and Emily Wilken of Carlsbad California; her daughter and son-in-law Margaret Alice and Manpreet Singh and grandchildren Jemesu and Eyerusalem Picone of Jacksonville, Fla.; her brother and sister-in-law William Richard and Ruth (Harwood) Cline of Bethesda, Md.; her cousin and her husband Kathy (Cline) and Donald Shayler of Palm Desert, Calif.; her cousin and his wife Ronald Richard and Cecilia M. (Wolf) Franklin of Lakewood, Colo.; her nieces Robin McCrary of Findlay, Ohio; Alison (Cline) Earles of Atlanta, Ga.; and Marian (Cline) LeGrelle of Rangiora, New Zealand.
Joan lived with her parents and brother in Wheat Ridge, Colo., where she graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 1957. She attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
While at CSU, she became a pledge of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Many of her sorority sisters became life-long friends and an important support system for her over the years. After graduation in 1961, her first professional position was with Forest Grove Union High School in Oregon.
She returned to Denver to be with her parents and recover from a bout with cancer when she was only 25. After recovery, Joan entered the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyo.
Shortly after her recovery, she met her husband at North Presbyterian Church in Denver in 1968. They were married on June 15, 1969. During the first months of their marriage, Joanie was working full time teaching “drop-outs” from the Denver School District and working on her thesis for her master’s degree at the University of Wyoming. In the summer of 1970, Joan and Ron traveled to Laramie where Joanie successfully defended her thesis and received her master’s degree in American Studies. All of this took place while she was carrying their first child, Kathryn Hope McCrary, who was born shortly afterwards on Aug. 5, 1970.
They lived in Lakewood, Colo., for 32 years.
As they approached retirement age, Joanie longed to return to the coast of Oregon and they moved to Florence in 2002. She was active in the Presbyterian Church Choir and the Florence Community Chorus. She met some of her closest friends through the two organizations and those relationships continued until her passing.
Joan just loved the weather and beautiful vegetation on the Oregon coast and settled into her last years in comfort and reflection.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw at 3996 Highway 101 in Florence, Ore. For information, phone 541-997-7136. Reception and refreshments to follow.
Peace to you all.
