Mark R. Lane passed away peacefully on January 31, 2023. Mark was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma cancer caused by exposure to asbestos while on active duty.
Mark was born on May 19, 1957 in Florence, Oregon. The Lane family moved to Woahink Lake where Mark mastered water skiing and “barefooting”. He often fished with his father, Chic Lane. Mark also enjoyed athletics in high school and was a member of the varsity Cross Country, Basketball & Golf teams. He graduated from Siuslaw High School in 1975.
Mark was nominated to the United States Air Force Academy by then U.S. Oregon Senator Bob Packwood and graduated from the Academy in 1979. Mark spent 28 decorated years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and retired with the rank of Lt. Col. Mark and his wife Mae, settled in Bend in May 2007.
Mark enjoyed the outdoors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He loved backpacking in the Cascades wilderness, snowboarding at Mount Bachelor and was a competitive master swimmer. He enjoyed traveling, reading, listening to Blue Grass and Folk music, and playing guitar. Mark was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend where he participated in the community Family Kitchen.
Mark is survived by his wife, Thongmi “Mae” Lane, his mother, Beverly Furlott both of Bend. His brother, Kent and sister-in-law, Arlynda of Central Point, and his sister, Kellie and brother-in-law, Bruce of Eugene. Mark was especially fond of his three nieces and one nephew. Mark and Mae often attended their sporting and school events, and they generously set up college tuition accounts for each. He is proceeded in death by his father, Ronald “Chic” Lane.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend.
