Mapleton tames Mustangs in league opener, falls to Lowell

Mapleton opened the league season Tuesday night at home against Mohawk, with the boys’ team landing a 46-36 win over the Mustangs.

Junior post Gabe Simington dominated the paint to lead the Sailors in scoring with 13 points, helping secure the team’s first win of the season and put Mapleton (1-3) at 1-0 to open the Mountain West League.

The Lady Sailors (0-4) fell to Mohawk that night, 49-15, with sophomore Heather McMaster-Willis scoring 9 points for Mapleton.

Thursday, Mapleton was back on its home court to host Lowell. The Red Devils won both match-ups, beginning with the girls’ game.

Mapleton junior Erin Michael led the Lady Sailors, scoring 11 of the team’s 15 points, with Lowell getting the win, 40-15.

Afterward, the Mapleton boys team fell to the Red Devils, 48-33.

Last night, Mapleton hosted its third game of the week, taking on Reedsport (after press deadlines), in non-league competition.

The Sailors will get a short break before returning to the hardwood on Wednesday, Dec. 20, when they’ll be on the road at Yoncalla, beginning with the girls game at 6 p.m.
