Lady Viks still looking for league win after loss to Spartans

Feb. 9, 2019 — Coming off a road game against Cottage Grove, the Lady Viks returned to Glenn Butler Court on Tuesday night to host the Spartans in a Sky-Em League match-up. Marist came into the game looking to improve its league record of 4-2 while Siuslaw was looking for its first league win.

Despite the home court advantage, Siuslaw struggled in the first period on both sides of the ball, committing 5 turnovers and being held to just 2 points scored by sophomore Lindsey Long. The early struggles led to a 10-2 deficit going into the second quarter.

The Lady Viks’ offense got going in the second period with senior Alyssa Richards scoring 3 points, and sophomores Gracie Freudenthal, Brea Blankenship and Lindsey Long claiming 2 points each.

Even with a strong effort, the 12 turnovers committed by the Lady Vikings in the first-half was a game changer as the Spartans closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 25-11 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Viks were facing an uphill climb as the Spartans retained control on a 10-2 run to begin the third quarter, then put the game out of reach before winning it, 44-19.

Sophomore Ruby Vlahov led the way for Marist with 13 points along with Madison Ficek with 6 points.

Sophomore Lindsey Long led Siuslaw with 6 points along with senior Alyssa Richards who had 5 points.

The Lady Viks took to the hardwood last night, hosting Marshfield (after press deadlines) and will play their last home game this Tuesday, Feb. 12, when they host Elmira for senior night.

Tip off for Tuesday’s game is set for 5:45 p.m.
