Feb. 16, 2019 — The Lady Vikings basketball team’s final home game proved to be its best of the season, providing fans good reason to celebrate during what was the final night on Siuslaw’s hardwood for the team’s four seniors: Alyssa Richards, Hailee Edgerly, Madison Reynolds and Lillian Wenham.

In a hard-fought first quarter that saw Siuslaw narrowly trailing 10-8 to start the second period, the Vikings fell behind 17-12 halfway through the quarter after a 3-pointer by the Falcons.

Sophomore Gracie Freudenthal put the Viks back within three, sparking an 8-point run that ended with a rebound by sophomore Brea Blankenship that closed the gap to within 1 point, 23-22 — and prompted an Elmira timeout.

For the remaining 22 secin ds of the half, both teams had possessions but neither managed to score before the buzzer.

Coming back from the break, the Falcons made their own run, getting ahead by 7 with 4:50 remaining in the third quarter.

Freudenthal struck with a rebound, sparking a series of Siuslaw buckets that included 7 points from sophomore Lindsey Long — including a 3-pointer — and more solid rebounding from Freudenthal.

With 30 seconds left, Blankenship drained a 3-point basket to keep the Viks within 1 point, 43-42, heading into the final period.

Reynolds kept the momentum going with a short jumper, and sophomore Savannah Morris gave Siuslaw its first lead, 46-45, prompting another Elmira timeout.

Richards gave Siuslaw its biggest lead of the game so far, followed by a steal from Blankenship that ended up in the hands of Long for a quick score and 50-45 advantage.

Richards and Long each struck again in quick succession as Siuslaw held out for its first Sky-Em win of the season, 56-51.

Long led scoring with 17 points, including two 3-pointers. Freudenthal had 13 points, Blankenship had 11, with a trio of 3-pointers, Morris and Richards had 6 points each, and Reynolds had 4 points.

Siuslaw’s season ended Thursday at Junction City, in a 69-35 loss to the Tigers.

Siuslaw finished the season at 5-18 overall.
