May 8, 2019 — Both Siuslaw ball clubs were on the road last Friday to take on the Lions in Cottage Grove. It was the second time the teams have faced each other on the diamonds, and Friday’s match-up was similar to the previous outcome — with the Lady Viks sweeping their opponents and the boys team getting cut short in each game of their doubleheader.
For the Lady Viks, it was a quick victory in the opener thanks to a 6-run series in the third inning that put Siuslaw head 10-1 and just one score away from a five-inning win. The Viks tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the fifth, and though Cottage Grove was able to bring 1 run across the plate in the bottom of the inning, it was well short of keeping Siuslaw from the win, 13-2, due to the 10-run rule.
“I was pleased to see our athletes maintain their will to win and overcome the adversity of [playing] the first- and second-place opponents in our previous games,” said Siuslaw coach Sean O’Mara, whose team were swept by Junction City and Marist last week.
“To come through with such a solid effort on Friday speaks volumes about their determination, leadership and teamwork,” O’Mara added.
Freshman Bailey Overton lead Siuslaw’s offense in the doubleheader, going 4-for-6 and knocking in 7 runs on a pair of singles, a double and 1 triple.
Overton also had 2 stolen bases, 2 walks and a hit-by-pitch, as well as 4 trips across the plate in the doubleheader.
All told, Siuslaw had five players bat .500 or better, including senior Lexie Smith (.500), who scored 3 runs and connected for an RBI on 2 singles and a double.
Senior Alyssa Richards (.571) had 5 runs scored and 4 RBIs on 4 singles. Lizbeth Garcia-Galvan (.500), a sophomore, knocked in 4 RBIs on 2 singles and 1 double. She also scored twice.
Senor Lupita Figueroa (.500) had 4 singles, including an RBI and 3 runs scored against the Lions.
In the pitcher’s circle, junior Nina Aaron struck out 13 Cottage Grove batters.
Siuslaw won the second game in seven innings, 15-10, to complete a 4game sweep of Cottage Grove this season.
In the boys game, the Vikings had the Lions in a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning until the Lions brought home 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to move ahead for the win, 7-4.
Senior left-hander Gabe Simington struck out 12 Lions and pitched a complete game, allowing only 2 earned runs.
“Gabe pitched very well and Zach Stinger had a great day at the plate,” said Siuslaw coach Tom Shinn.
Stinger went 3-for-5 at the plate in the doubleheader, including 1 run scored.
Sophomore Chayton James was 2-for-4 in the opener with an RBI, and junior Caleb Hennessee had 2 RBIs and eventually went 3-for-6 on the day.
“Caleb had a very productive day,” said Shinn.
Sophomore Elijah Blankenship and junior Jared Northrop each scored once in game one.
In the nightcap, Cottage Grove wrapped things up in five innings, 14-3.
Friday, both Siuslaw teams will host Marist for a doubleheader to finish the season.
First game is at 3 p.m., followed by game two at 5 p.m.
During Friday’s doubleheaders, seniors on both teams will be recognized.
