J. City d Siuslaw:

25-18, 25-18, 25-21

Oct. 20, 2018 — Heading into the final game of the regular season last Tuesday, the Lady Vikings volleyball team was just one step away from a post-season appearance as the state’s No. 21-ranked team.

Only the top 20 teams advance to the 4A play-in round, so Siuslaw needed to not only manage an upset over the Lady Tigers on their home court, they also needed some other upsets within the league in order to be bumped up into the top 20.

Earlier in the season, Junction City swept Siuslaw in three sets. Tuesday night saw a repeat of the sweep in straight sets once again.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 2-8 in league play (9-11 overall), which didn’t help in Siuslaw's hopes of making the play-ins.

In addition, Marist and Marshfield also won their matches, creating a three-way tie for second place at 6-4, effectively shutting Siuslaw out of the play-in round.

Thursday night, Junction City went on to sweep Marist (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) on neutral ground at Elmira High School for the Sky-Em’s No. 2 seed.

No. 3-ranked Cottage Grove (9-1, 16-4) claimed the league title and top seed in the league.

Marist and No. 8-ranked Marshfield will host two of the four upcoming play-in games in the 16-team play-off bracket, with the top two teams in each of the 4A leagues getting a bye in the first round of play-offs.

Tuesday night’s match marked the end of the season for Siuslaw, as well as the final volleyball game in the high school careers of Makenzie York, Alyssa Richards and Falon Borgnino.
