April 17, 2019 — Taking on the No. 3-ranked Tigers of Junction City was going to be a challenge in itself. Add an injury-depleted Viking roster that forced Siuslaw players out of their normal position, and last Friday’s double-header challenge became magnified.

“We went up against the Sky-Em’s No. 2 seed and gained some valuable experience in handling adversity and facing the challenges that that type of team brings to a field,” said Siuslaw coach Sean O’Mara.

Friday’s sweep of Siuslaw extended Junction City’s winning streak to nine consecutive games as the Sky-Em season moves into its second week of league play this week — with the Tigers undefeated in the Sky-Em at 3-0 (10-2 overall), and Siuslaw at 0-3 (0-9 overall.)

In both of Friday’s games, Siuslaw’s infield was comprised of freshmen and sophomores in three out of four positions.

The Vikings got their biggest offensive push came from senior Lupita Figueroa, who accounted for three of Siuslaw’s eventual six hits in the doubleheader. That included the Viks’ only hit in game one.

In the nightcap, Figueroa went 2-for-3, as did sophomore Lizbeth Garcia-Galvan, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Senior catcher Lexi Smith had a double and 1 run scored in game two.

Yesterday, Siuslaw hosted Cottage Grove (after press deadlines) and will be on the road at Elmira Friday, in a doubleheader against the Falcons beginning at 3 p.m.  (weather permitting)
