Jan. 26, 2019 — In a low-scoring battle between the Lady Vikings and Falcons last Tuesday night in Elmira, both teams were looking to pick up their first league win.
Siuslaw took an early lead and moved ahead 8-2, but the Falcons went on a 12-0 run about halfway into the first quarter, then continued that momentum unanswered through the first half of the second period for a 14-8 lead.
Though Viking sophomores Lindsey Long and Gracie Freudenthal each scored in double digits with 10 points each, Siuslaw was never quite able to close the gap, trailing by 7 at the half (22-15), then coming within 5 points at the end of the third quarter, 27-22.
Siuslaw posted 12 points in the fourth period to come within 2 points, but Siuslaw’s biggest opponent down the stretch was the free throw line, where the Viks missed 10 out of 14 attempts.
Those missed opportunities played to the Falcons’ favor as Elmira held on for a slim 36-34 win.
Long and Freudenthal combined shooting for 20 of Siuslaw’s 34 points.
Earlier in the evening, Siuslaw was hoping to deny the Falcons their first league win but triple-digit scoring by three of Elmira’s players squelched those hopes late in the game for the Viks.
After trading baskets for much of the first half, Siuslaw edged into a 15-14 lead with 3 minutes remaining before the break.
The Falcons then went on a 12-3 run and took a 26-18 lead entering the half.
The Viks came out to score the first basket of the third quarter and cut their deficit to 6 points, but Elmira answered with a 15-0 run that left Siuslaw trailing 41-20 heading into the final period.
Once again, the Viks battled, getting within 9 points, 44-35, only to have the Falcons put together another run (12-0) to put the game out of reach on the way to a 70-44 win.
Siuslaw sophomore Jacob Foskett led the Viks in scoring with 10 points.
Last night, Siuslaw began the second half of league competition by host Junction City (after press deadlines).
Siuslaw will get a break before returning to the hardwood on Friday, Feb. 1, on the road at Cottage Grove.
Girls will tip off against the Lions at 5:45 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7:15 p.m.
