Oct. 10, 2018 — The Viking cross country team was at Philomath for the annual Paul Mariman Invitational on Saturday, where junior Hannah Rannow and sophomore Brea Blankenship each fininished among the top five in the girls’ race.
Rannow crossed the finish in 19:12.7 for the day’s second-fastest time and a personal best. Blankenship, who finished in 20:08.0, placed fifth overall.
Siuslaw also had two top-10 finishes, with junior Chloe Madden running a time of 20:55.70 to take eighth, and fellow junior Anne Wartnik claiming ninth with a time of 20:57.20 to keep Siuslaw in the running for first place.
However, it was the performance of freshman Rylee Colton that helped put the Vikings on top by running a personal best of 21:35.30 for 15th place. Her time helped earn a team score of 28 points — nearly 30 points better than second-place team Philomath with 57 points.
Sky-Em competitor Cottage Grove was third place with 79 points, followed by Gladstone (99), Newport (104), Cascade (159) and Waldport (163).
In the boys race, junior Brendon Jensen was second overall in 16:58.7, followed by fellow junior Jonah Jarman in 17:38.50 for eighth place.
Sophomore Ryan Jennings ran a PR time of 18:06.4 to take 15th place, and freshman Chad Hughes was 26th in 18:35.6.
Sophomore Jaxson Jensen ran a time of 19:02.0 for 37th place to finish out scoring for Siuslaw.
Newport took the team title with a score of 63. Philomath was second overall (70), followed by Siuslaw (86), Bandon (141), Sisters (145), Cottage Grove (158), Sweet Home (162), Elmira (178), Gladstone (186), Cascade (247), South Umpqua (293) and Jefferson (355).
Saturday, Siuslaw will compete at the Pacific Classic in Portland before finishing up its last meet before districts during the Run for the Brownies on Oct. 18 at Florence Golf Liks.
The Sky-Em League district meet will be Thursday, Oct. 25, at Lane Community College in Eugene.
