Jan. 19, 2019 — After coming close several times, the Lady Sailors basketball team picked up their first league win at Eddville Tuesday night, dominating the Lady Eagles at both ends of the court. Mapleton claimed 22 steals and scored 24 rebounds. Meanwhile, they doubled their shooting attempts with 59 looks that paid off in 46 points — and a 15-point victory margin.
Five-foot-nine-freshman post Evangelina Spradling had 4 blocks and 6 boards for Mapleton, and went 6-for-13 from the foul line.
Freshman Jahala Blake, a 5-foot-7 post, grabbed 4 steals to go with 3 rebounds that helped secure the Mountain West League win, 40-25.
In the boys’ match-up, 6-foot-2 sophomore forward JJ Neece posted 24 points, along with 9 points from 6-foot-3 freshman forward AJ Moso.
Mapleton kept things close throughout the game until the final three minutes, when Neece, along with brother Nate, fould out — leaving just four Mapleton players on the hardwood to finish the game.
Eddyville was able to slip ahead in the closing minutes for a slim 46-39 win.
Thursday, the Lady Sailors were at home to host Triangle Lake, with the Lakers (4-4, 9-9) taking the win, 48-18. In the previous match-up between the two teams, Triangle Lake won 48-11.
This Tuesday, Mapleton will host Mohawk as the the Mountain West enters the final stretch of the league season.
Boys will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the girls’ game at 7 p.m.
