Lady Sailors: 02 04 04 05 — 13
Lady Irish: 11 13 18 10 — 52
Dec. 19, 2018 — Mapleton’s basketball programs had a busy weekend, with the Lady Sailors hosting Waldport on Saturday, and the Mapleton boys competing in the North Douglas Winter Invitational. Heading in to the weekend, though, the Sailors were on the hardwood at Marcola to take on the Mustangs of Mohawk High School in what turned out to be a defensive barn-burner.
A total of 63 points was scored in the game, with the scoring almost evenly divided. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Sailors held an 8-point lead over the Mustangs, who mounted a rally in the final minutes. Mapleton coach Eric Wolgamott said his team is “still learning how to win close games,” and this one was about as close as it gets — with Mohawk barely edging out Mapleton, 32-31.
Nate and JJ Neece led scoring, with Nate accounting for 11 points and JJ claiming 8 on the night.
In the girls’ game, The Lady Mustangs turned in a dominant performance for a 61-16 win.
Over the weekend, the Lady Sailors returned to their home hardwood to host a match-up with the visiting Irish of Waldport.
In that game, things opened with a long period without scoring as both teams adjusted their offense. Waldport was the first to score after a full two minutes. Though Mapleton sank its first basket less than a minute later, the scoreboard remained unchanged on Mapleton's side for the rest of the period as Waldport moved into an 11-2 lead.
At the top of the second quarter, Mapleton freshman Evangelina Spradling dished the ball to senior Erin Michael, who scored the first point of the period. Unfortunately, the Irish retaliated with a 7-0 run that included a 3-pointer and a steal for a quick lay-up.
A rebound by Spradling with 5:06 before the half made it 6-17 for Mapleton, with scoring for the sailors ending there for the half as Waldport took a 24-6 lead at the break.
Sophomore Emily Stevens provided a steal and the Sailors' only bucket of the third period.
Trailing 42-8 to start the fourth quarter, Mapleton got scoring from Michael, Spradling, and sophomore Briena Jensen before the Irish took the win, 52-13.
Meanwhile, the Sailor boys' team was competing at North Douglas on Friday and Saturday, falling to Elkton (46-32) and North Douglas (80-45).
Last night, Mapleton hosted Crow (after press deadlines) and will play at Reedsport Thursday night.
Girls tip off at 4 p.m., followed by the boys at 5:30 p.m.
