Dec. 22, 2018 — By the time the Siuslaw wrestling team reached the middle weight brackets at Tuesday’s three-team dual meet at North Bend, they were in trouble, trailing 11-36.
But the tide quickly shifted in favor of the Vikings.
Starting with the 145-lb. bracket, Siuslaw went on to win the next five matches, including pins by sophomores Elijah LaCosse at 145 lbs. and Ryan Jennings at 152 lbs., and senior Riley Jennings at 170 lbs.
Along the way, sophomore Hector Garcia won by technical fall over Romig Beley at 160 lbs., and sophomore Christian Newlan won by a 12-8 decision.
A forfeit to junior Matthew Horrillo at 285 lbs. put the Vikings on top for a 38-36 win over host North Bend.
Siuslaw also got a forfeit at 138 lbs., giving LaCosse a win before moving up to the 145-lb. match, where he pinned Eric Monsebroten in 1:09.
The Vikings were also scheduled to wrestle Reedsport at the three-team dual meet, but results for that match-up weren’t available at press time.
In exhibition matches, Siuslaw junior Antwon Ho pinned North Bend’s Jake Siewell in just 1:46 in a non-scoring bout.
Siuslaw wrestlers will take a break from the mats this week before returning for the multi-divisional Bend Invitational set for Saturday, Jan. 5. Teams will include Henley, La Pine, Mountain View, Ridgeview, Sisters, Bend and Siuslaw.
Siuslaw’s first home meet will be held Jan. 15.
