K of C take pride in patriotism

Catholic organization raises flag in front of future Human Bean
April 28, 2023 — On Thursday, April 13 St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Dunes Knights of Columbus (K of C) Assembly 3656 members installed a new flag pole and American flag in front of the soon-to-be-completed car wash and Human Bean coffee shop near the intersection of Highway 101 and Rhododendron Drive.
Also in attendance at the Patriotic Degree were Scott and Shawn Randel, brothers and co-owners of the car wash that is being built at the location. Shawn and his wife also co-own the coffee shop that is being built.
Scott is a Gulf War Veteran and was joined at the flag raising by a handful of Vietnam War Veterans who are K of C members.
The flag raising is part of the fundraising endeavors of K of C Councils in not only Florence but in otter councils in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
“I am so proud to see the Red White and Blue in front of the Human Bean,” said Thomas Zahara, a K of C Assembly 3656 member. “Patriotism is a platform of the Knights worldwide. Currently, we are supporting Knights Councils and their communities in Ukraine with our fundraisers as well.”
St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Dunes K of C Assembly 3656 hosts a monthly bingo game at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on the first Friday of each month, from 1-4 p.m., as part of its fundraising endeavors.
“Over this last year we have donated all our proceeds to St. Jude's Hospital, Caring Pregnancy Center, Florence Food Share, and several more [organizations],” said Zahara. “This next month we will be donating our proceeds to SOS of Florence. We invite all to join us with our efforts to help our community and others.”
