Going to the dogs

Okto-Fur-Fest 2019 results

Oct. 16, 2019 — The annual Florence Weiner Dog Races returned last Saturday during Okto-Fur-Fest at the Florence Events Center, where more than 600 people came to enjoy food, family fun, music, games and Florence’s famous Weiner Dog Races.

Along with yodeling and stein-holding endurance competitions, visitors enjoyed pretzels, bratwurst, German chocolate cake and beer, as well as a chance to win a number of raffle prizes — all to raise money for Florence Van Fans, which transports cancer patients to out-of-town treatment centers.

Florence Mayor Joe Henry opened the festivities by officially tapping a mini keg, which was followed by Nyah Vollmar singing the National Anthem and Siuslaw News editor Ned Hickson emceeing the competitions leading up to the day’s races, hosted by Jeanna Petersen.
