Aug. 29, 2022 — It was shoulder to shoulder at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum on Aug. 26 when the Florence community gathered to wish an area icon, the Sea Lion Caves, a happy 90th birthday.
The local tourist attraction opened its doors in 1932. Ever since, locals and visitors alike have marveled at one of the largest sea caves in the world and the hundreds of large mammals that call it home.
A large crowd gathered around a special exhibit celebrating the caves that front and center at the museum for the birthday bash. Champagne, wine and snacks of different varieties were provided to visitors to the event.
Local dignitaries, including Florence Mayor Joe Henry and State Rep. Boomer Wright, were among the community members in attendance.
The highlight of the evening may have been when Sea Lion Caves General Manager Jim McMillian presented the museum with a check for $25,000 to help support the continued operation of the museum that celebrates and helps to preserve the area’s history.
McMillan was pleased with the turnout and appreciates the support that was shown.
“The turnout for the event was amazing,” said McMillan. “We are very thankful to the museum for hosting this celebration. The support of this community is unbelievable.”
