Evelyn Katherine Etzel Gray, passed peacefully, December 22, 2022.

Evelyn Katherine Etzel Gray, born March 25, 1927 to George and Mary Etzel in Shaw Oregon, passed peacefully, December 22, 2022 in Florence OR. She was surrounded by her loved ones during her final hours. Evelyn was raised on farms in Shaw and Perrydale Oregon where she was Valedictorian of her high school. She was second oldest of four and shouldered much of the responsibility for her younger siblings. Her favorite activity was riding her horse Pal. Evelyn was an accomplished pianist, and played the organ at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for many years. She exchanges letters with a local boy, Dick Gray, who had joined the Navy. At some point during their correspondence Dick and Evelyn transitioned from friends to sweethearts. They married Novem er 12, 1947, shortly after Dick left the Navy. Together they raised seven children; Cynthia Gray Andrews, Debbie Gray Peterson, Teresa Gray Bartlett, Jim Gray, Matt Gray, Dan Gray, Tom Gray and one grandson, Jeff Gray. Evelyn worked for Siuslaw School District for over 20 years. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family, including 50 grand and great grandchildren. They were her great joy. She is predeceased by her husband Dick, sister Doris, brother Cletus and daughter Cyndy. She is survived by her six remaining children, her sister Marita, and her many grandchildren. There will be a service and celebration of life in the summer.
