Eugene woman struck, killed south of the Siuslaw River Bridge

Monday evening at approximately 5:20 p.m., OSP Troopers from the Springfield Area Command and Florence Worksite responded with Florence Police, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and Western Lane Ambulance to a the scene of a fatal collision between a vehicle and pedestrian just south of the Siuslaw River Bridge at milepost 191. 

The preliminary investigation determined that 28-year-old Heather Marie Sanford, of Eugene but who was currently residing in Florence, was walking in the travel portion of the southbound lane of Highway 101 when she was struck by a southbound 2017 GMC Sierra pickup. Sanford suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. Sanford was wearing dark clothing at the time and had been reported by other passing motorists as a hazard immediately prior to the incident. 

The GMC was driven by Florence resident William Arthur Brown, 70, who is cooperating with the investigation and is not suspected of any wrong doing. 

Highway 101 was reduced to one lane travel for approximately two hours while OSP Troopers conducted the investigation. OSP was assisted on scene by ODOT Incident Response, along with members of the Florence Police Department and Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.
