On Friday, May 10, The Florence Elks Lodge #1858 presented Andy Marohl, Principal of Siuslaw Middle School, with STEM school supplies as part of its 2018-19 Promise Grant. The presentation was made by Karen Smales, the Exalted Ruler of the Florence Lodge, and Joyce Middleton, a Trustee of the Lodge.

The Elks National Foundation sponsors the Promise Grant to give local Elk Lodges the opportunity to support their community. Over the last four years, the Florence Lodge has utilized the grant to fund the Living Voices multi-media educational program for the eighth-grade social study students in partnership with Seacoast Entertainment Association. The grant has provided enough additional funds for the Lodge to also purchase much needed school supplies. This year, the focus was on STEM supplies and included graphing calculators, a refrigerator and other materials from a wish list provided by teachers at the school.

The Lodge also informed principal Marohl that it was successful in the renewal of the grant and will be bringing Living Voices back and will also be looking to help out with a new STEM wish list in the next school year. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)

Over the last several years, the Florence Lodge has applied for and been awarded 4 to 5 grants a year from the Elks National Foundation. Over $40,000 in funds have been used to support local schools, the Siuslaw Band Program, Habitat for Humanity, Food Share, Back Pack for Kids and several veteran programs — including a Christmas gift project for veterans residing in local senior residential care facilities.
