Eagles out of reach for lady Vikings

Siuslaw: 02  03   13  06 — 22

Stayton: 09  12   15  07  — 43

Dec. 22, 2018 — The opening minutes of Tuesday’s girls basketball game between Siuslaw and visiting Stayton was a virtual stalemate as both teams went scoreless for the first 4 minutes. Though both the Lady Vikings and Eagles had good looks at the basket and some open shots, neither team was able to get shots to fall — either due to them being off the mark or a simple matter of physics gone awry.

Whatever the reason, it seemed more than ironic that after spending the first half of the opening quarter unable to sink a basket, Stayton ended the period with 9 points — all of them from beyond the arc and scored with 3-pointers.

Siuslaw’s offense, meanwhile, remained stalled, with the only basket coming on a hard-fought rebound by sophomore guard Lindsey Long. The Viks didn’t fare much better in the second period, adding just three points to their sum total — on a rebound from senior post Madison Reynolds and a free throw from sophomore wing Gracie Freudenthal  — as Stayton claimed another 12 points for a 21-5 halftime lead.

Both teams ran a high-pressure man-to-man defense in the second half, and Siuslaw saw some success, more than tripling its score from the entire first half. Senior post Alyssa Richards provided the first basket of the third quarter on a rebound just inside the paint. The Eagles nabbed a steal a short time later for a quick lay-up, and junior post Mia Collins answered for Siuslaw on a drive along the baseline to the hoop.

Stayton answered with a 3-pointer and once again after capitalizing on a bad Siuslaw pass.

Richards scored on a rebound with 3:17 remaining in the period, followed by a free throw from Freudenthal, but the Eagles went on an 8-2 run leading to the final 30 seconds, extending their lead to 36-14.

Reynolds scored the last shot of the quarter with a rebound, leaving the Vikings trailing by 20.

Though Siuslaw nearly matched the Eagles in scoring during the final period, thanks in part to scoring from sophomore guard Brea Blankenship, Stayton easily held on for the win, 43-22.

Blankenship led scoring with 5 points. Collins, Reynolds and Richards had 4 points each.

The Vikings competed in the two-day Bandon Dunes Holiday Invitational Thursday and Friday (after press deadlines), and will return to the hardwood Dec. 27 to host Reedsport, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
