BARNUM—Dan Barnum died July 14, 2017, in a motor- cycle accident on Highway 20, east of Burns, Ore.
He was returning from a vacation with friends, having traveled across the country to Maine for a Fourth of July celebration. He died doing what he loved; it just happened way too soon.
Dan was born in Florence on May 16, 1956. He was raised here, spent his whole life here, and loved it here. Dan’s father bought and developed land around Collard Lake in 1960. Dan and his brother Marc grew up camping, fishing and snor- keling during the summers. This is where Dan got the idea of becoming a certified skin diver. He and Marc were certi- fied when Dan was 15.
Dan loved many sports like bowling and golf, but baseball and football were his favorites. He was All-Coast Defensive End his senior year on the Siuslaw High School football team. After graduating, he worked for Bob Mills Sr. alongside his friend, Bobby Mills Jr., driving truck and running backhoes, cats — whatever he was needed to do.
He had a natural affinity for running heavy equipment.
He went to work for Murphy’s Saw Mill as a millwright, then on to foreman. During this time, computers were becoming a hot item and Dan taught himself code and started writing programs to help the mill organize sched- ules. When the mill in Florence shut down, he eventually became superintendent of Murphy’s Mill in Swisshome until it closed.
He drove log truck for Gary Foglio for several years until an opportunity to take over the maintenance department at Sandpines Golf Course came along. Dan put his millwright skills to use keeping all the equipment running.
Dan never lost his love of computers, which led to his last job as assistant IT technician for the Siuslaw School District, where his love of working with people made him a natural at the school.
“Dan the Computer Man” was appreciated for his big smile and “can do” attitude by both staff and students.
Dan loved fishing and being on the ocean, especially crab- bing and enjoying the crus- taceans with a bit of garlic but- ter. Dan, or “GUD” (Great Uncle Dan) as his nephews nicknamed him, was the glue that held his family together. One of his favorite pastimes was shooting off to Eugene, Newport or Coos Bay to watch Trae, and Court or Tyler play ball.
His main passion was riding his Harley with friends.
Dan met his best friend, Scott Waiss, riding with a group of people from the Florence area. Dan was adopt- ed into the Waiss clan by Scott and Gayle, and their three daughters, Melissa, Deb and Sarah. The girls soon fell under the spell of the big smile and booming laugh, and GUD snared three more nieces into his fan club.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Mickey Barnum; and his sister, Barbra Miller.
Dan is survived by his son, James Barnum (Eugene); brother and sister in-law Marc
and Cindy Barnum; nephews Jesse Barnum and Danny Barnum, Troy and Rachel Knabe, Travis and Sarah Knabe; great-nephews Tyler, Trae and Court Knabe; great- niece Emily; and many cousins who will miss him greatly.
