Aug. 26, 2020 — Over the weekend, baseball was in full swing during a two-day little league baseball jamboree held at the Siuslaw High School softball fields.
Florence 10-and-under team the Littlefoots competed against teams from Newport, Lincoln City, Willamette Valley and Thurston — which Florence beat twice in come-from-behind wins in the sixth inning.
The Littlefoot’s only loss came at the hands of Willamette Valley All-Stars, which was one win away from the Little League World Series last season as a 9U team.
Florence had lost to that same team a week earlier, 2-8, but was the only team to score against the W. Valley line-up.
Saturday, Florence opened with a 21-11 win over Newport, then defeated Lincoln City 19-6.
The Littlefoots then lost to Willamette Valley 2-14 before edging out Thurston 10-9 in the final game of the day.
Sunday, Florence swept both games, with another narrow win over Thurston, 8-7, and a lopsided 23-11 victory against Newport.
For the jamboree, the Littlefoots scored 83 runs and batted .513 as a team. Included in the 11-person 10U roster for Florence were two 8U players and one 7U player — making the team’s 5-1 performance especially impressive.
