Alfred E. Owens passed Friday, June 9, 2023. He was 91 years old and a long-time resident of Florence.

Al was born in 1932 to Ralph & Carrie Owens in Woodward, OK, the final of three children. He grew up in Oklahoma, graduated from high school and went on to complete his master’s degree from Oklahoma University. He met his wife of 67 years, Alice Joan Reynolds while teaching in Englewood, KS. Al moved his growing family to the PNW in 1964 when he accepted a job teaching Industrial Arts at Roosevelt Junior High in Eugene. In 1968 he accepted his final position to initiate Lane Community College’s satellite campus in Florence. He served in this capacity for over 22 years and retired in 1990. Al was also a long-standing Rotarian for many years, and an integral member of his church.

Al is preceded in death by his daughter, Gaela Hummel. He leaves behind his wife, Joan, three children, Deena (Scott), Reta (Jeff), Eric (Anne), twelve grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was a man of faith, with unwavering integrity, commitment, and humility. He lived by example and will be remembered as an educator to his children and grandchildren. He instilled a strong work ethic and the importance of doing something right the first. Al Owens will forever be remembered for his faith, devotion to family and his service above self.

A Celebration of Life for Al will be Saturday, July 29, 1:00 pm at Cross Road Church, 1380 10^th St., Florence, OR.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Western Lane Community Foundation.  Private interment was held at Pacific Sunset Cemetery.  Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
