‘A Tradition of Excellence’ continues with 3rd edition

Don Hunt’s book updated after Vik’s football championship
April 1, 2022 — For Viking football fans who need something to fill their time from November, when the state playoffs end, to August, when players return to the gridiron for “daily doubles,” Siuslaw High alumni Don Hunt has just the thing for you.
Last week, Hunt announced the release of the third edition of his book, “The History of Siuslaw High School Football, A Tradition of Excellence.”
The 445-page book has been updated to include a new cover photo showing the Vikings celebrating on the field moments after winning the 2021 Class 3A state title; a photo page with action photos from the game; detailed chapters on the 2021 spring and fall seasons; and updated school records that show the top 10 Vikings in a myriad of statistical categories.
The book, originally published in 2018, contains feature chapters on former coaches Erv Garrison, Len Lutero and Tim Dodson, along with current coach Sam Johnson. It also has chapters on longtime statisticians Lanny Nivens and Bob Hylton, as well as former Viking standouts Dennis Howell, Ron Libby and the quarterbacking Mitchell brothers: Jake, Aaron and Preston.
Also in this edition, Hunt selects an all-time “dream team” revealing the top Vikings at each position.
Detailed chapters covering every season from 1955 through the undefeated championship run of 2021 are included.
